Trombonist Curtis Biggs is a performer and educator from Payson, Utah. He holds degrees from Brigham Young University and Yale University, and will soon finish his DMA in contemporary music at Bowling Green State University. Curtis was a recipient of the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival in 2014, and was also a finalist in the American Trombone Workshop National Solo Competition in 2018.
After his studies at Yale, Curtis held the position of principal bass trombonist with Symphony S.O.N.G. (Symphony Orchestra for the Next Generation) based in Seoul, South Korea. A major role of his position was also touring South Korea with the Symphony S.O.N.G. Brass Quintet. Curtis is currently on the faculty of Snow College in Ephraim, UT.
Together with his wife and pianist Jackie, Curtis founded the Radium Duo. The name Radium comes from Latin, meaning "ray" or "light." The Radium Duo maintains an outward focus while sharing their music, with the aim of inspiring others in a meaningful way.
Curtis is also an emerging composer. He premiered his first work on November 14th in Bryan Hall at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. The work, titled Echo Canyon, is based on pitches heard in the wind while driving through a canyon. It requires multiphonics, circular breathing, and coordinated use of the wah-wah mute. Pieces in progress include a work for the “T-Horn,” or trombone bell section, and a work for bass trombone with a length of tube attached to the tuning slide.
